2 zombie movies in a row. Both amazing, but unfortunately I cannot recommend this one. Even though I loved it, I felt as though I must shower afterwards. This is a filthy, dirty and amazing movie–that I will not watch again for a long time. Not because I was offended, but it is just like nothing I have ever seen. I actually felt like I was in some sticky theater in the 70’s which really added to the viewing experience.
For example….in one scene a zombie gets finished killing a doctor with a bone saw and then explodes a pulsating pustule upon another doctor and rubs the bloody mass into the other doctors eye and mouth. Yes, now you feel the dirt don’t you? I felt like the director took this movie to places that other film makers would not go. For instance a young boy is killed with a gun that his mom gave him to kill his father who had turned into a zombie. At this point in the movie I was overwhelmed with the magnitude of gore and filth to really care.
Why did you watch it you ask? What you should ask is why I watched it twice. Well to be honest, I watched it in the theater and at home because no one has made a movie like this before. The whole movie was filmed in bad light, with edited in scratches and other film effects to make it look old, which REALLY added to the ambiance and scare. A main character in the film is an old Burt Reynolds look alike that owns a BBQ diner called the “Bone Shack.” He is constantly eating ribs and chicken that is lathered in BBQ sauce, then repeatedly licks his fingers. Something about that really made the rest of the film that much unsettling. Rodriguez, intentionally did everything he could to make you feel like you were in a nasty movie theater 35 years ago. He did an amazing job at achieving this. It was creative and cultish.
Don’t watch this movie unless you can appreciate the genius that it is, otherwise you will just be grossed out.
